Sulalit Bandyopadhyay

Sulalit Bandyopadhyay is an Associate Professor in Particle Engineering and Hydrometallurgy at NTNU's Department of Chemical Engineering, where he also serves as Centre Manager of the Particle Engineering Research Centre established in 2021. He is presently the leader of the Norwegian Network for Hydrometallurgy and a member of the operative group for the Gemini Centre within hydrometallurgy - HYPROS. He graduated with a B.E (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University, India and was thereafter awarded the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship to do his MSc in Chemical Engineering at NTNU, Norway. He earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from NTNU, working on multifunctional nanoparticles for drug delivery applications.

With extensive international research experience, including previous appointments at Delft University of Technology and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, as well as industry experience as a Polymer Scientist at Jotun, his research exploits fundamentals of Chemical Engineering in two broad areas – particle engineering and hydrometallurgy. Some selected research topics include synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of nanoparticles, development and application of nanoparticle-based hydrological tracers, modelling of nanosystems, and sustainable processes for lithium-ion battery recycling. His work spans applications in nanomedicine, including drug delivery, biosensing among others to environmental resource management such as water management, recovery of valuable metals from process streams among others . He has contributed to impactful innovations, including magnetic nanoparticle-based COVID-19 test kits in Norway.

He is a recipient of multiple prestigious awards and fellowships, including JBNSTS Senior Scholarship (2006–2010), the DAAD summer fellowship (2009), the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship (2010–2012), the Innovator of the Year Award at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (2020), NTNU's Employee Award for Innovation and Collaboration with Working Life (2018–2021), and the Research Council of Norway's Innovation Award (2021) — the latter two for the COVID-19 test. He is currently a fellow in NTNU’s Outstanding Academic Fellows Programme (2022–2026), reflecting his contributions to research excellence and innovation.
